Transit Ambassador

Employment type: Temporary Part-Time

Number of Openings: 6 positions

Hourly Wage: $17.97

NOW HIRING: Transit Ambassador

TCAT is seeking motivated individuals to serve as Transit Ambassadors. Ambassadors will gather feedback and input from their communities on TCAT’s Transportation Development Plan. The Transportation Development Plan, a process most public transit systems undertake every 10 years as industry best practice, will evaluate TCAT’s existing system in order to identify and to improve service.

TCAT’s last Transportation Development Plan was implemented in 2010 with a comprehensive system overhaul that was based on surveys and numerous public information sessions. With its most recent Transportation Development Plan now underway, TCAT hopes to capture an even broader range of public input with the help of Transit Ambassadors who will serve as liaisons between TCAT and their own networks and connections.

After a paid training in transit planning and community engagement strategies, they will conduct surveys, assist with focus group discussions, and do other outreach tasks with community-members to learn about how they use TCAT, the barriers that they face to using transit, and the improvements in service they would like to see going forward. The Transit Ambassadors will serve a critical role in amplifying the voices of those traditionally not involved and represented in transportation planning and those that may experience additional transportation barriers.

  • Complete a 5-hour training on the following topics:
  1. Transit Planning 101
  2. The Transportation Development Plan
  3. Community Engagement Strategies and Techniques
  • Collect and document observations, insight, and feedback from community members through surveys, group discussions, and other engagement activities
  • Share feedback collected with TCAT staff at biweekly check-ins

Skills and Experience

Prior experience with transportation-related initiatives is not required. We encourage applicants of all ages to apply!

The ideal candidate:

  • Has connections to a community in Ithaca that is transportation vulnerable or faces barriers to using transit, and therefore could benefit from increased access to TCAT’s services
  • Has an interest in transit in Tompkins County and a willingness to learn about TCAT
  • Has the ability to communicate with diverse groups

Schedule and Hours

The Transit Ambassador will be employed on a part-time, temporary basis. The position is scheduled for approximately 10 hours of work per month from September 2020-November 2020 and February 2021-April 2021.
